I will never understand. Because I am white I will never know. This is my privilege. Right now I can inform myself, better educate myself, open the conversation with my children. Ignorance is not acceptable. In fact it is deeply destructive. Where do we start to unravel it though? This is the fat I’ve been chewing for the past couple of days, the ‘what can I do’ question? Which so often leaves me feeling that there are no words, it leaves me feeling impotent, and this is no longer acceptable either. I can’t undo the injustices that have been done. I can’t bring back the lives that have been lost. Whatever efforts I make seem small and insignificant, but I can make those efforts. My ‘doing better’ looks today like information gathering. I’ve listened to @rachel.cargle and watched @jadapinkettsmith discuss colourism on ‘red table talks’. Both inspirational, heart breaking and humbling. My kids have listened and watched too. I look to @glennondoyle as a white woman navigating the path and asking the same questions and @chelseahandler on white privilege. Watching them makes me realise that it’s a clumsy bumpy and really uncomfortable road to navigate and that the chances are I’m going to get it wrong... but what are the options? Stay quiet? Look away? We have to overcome our discomfort and simply open the conversation for the sake of unraveling our ignorance and finding a new way to live and to raise the voices of those who so desperately need us. It’s normal to be feeling grief right now. It’s normal to be in pain. To be scared and anxious. It’s normal to feel as though the world has been turned inside out and you can’t find the ground. We are human and as humans we need the love of our friends and families after a trauma, we need to be held and to work it through before we need to return to work or school. We need to feel safe, to decompress, to shake ourselves off and then move on... to pick up the pieces of our broken lives, health (mental and physical), livelihoods and start again alongside our nearest and dearest... this awful awful sense of being torn from our safe lock down and told to ‘return to work’ is inhumane. I love trees, and I love tree pose... I also love hugging trees. For real. Leaning up against a big old oak or pine usually... taking a few breaths and yawning out some tension. Tree hugging is good, but it doesn’t beat people hugging. I’m absolutely desperate to hug a person. Just to hold a friend and close my eyes and feel the love flow between us. What I’d give for a squeeze with friends and family... I don’t think I’d let go... I’d squeeze and squeeze and weep and cry and feel all the grief and tension lift off my chest... I worry about all the grief and tension this is causing... I feel the ache in my heart. I’m sure everyone has some emotional aches at the moment. Went for a walk, had a big stretch... thought about all the anxiety surrounding us, the uncertainty of stepping out of our lockdown bubbles, how lockdown is pretty straight forward and how the future is uncertain... the uncertainty of how teachers are going to manage social distancing between 4 year olds, how people on mass will be able to commute to work... how we’ll pay our god damn mortgage next month... whether we’ll be alive... it’s a fucking shit storm isn’t it? Who here isn’t feeling at least tentative about moving forward?
